“This program provides a valuable service to the stakeholders we serve in law enforcement,” said LEMIT Executive Director John Ray. “Anything that allows us to help our police chiefs keep their officers and communities safer is something we want to be involved in and are proud to offer.”
Originally Founded in 2023 through a previous DOJ grant, the center provides training at no cost to law enforcement officers in agencies across the U.S., focusing primarily on Texas and surrounding states. To date, the center has completed trainings in 9 states.
De-Escalation Training Center Director Garreth Tiefenbach says his goal is to increase the availability of the training with an expanded coverage area while serving agencies that may not otherwise have access to this type of training.
“We want to make sure we strategically serve areas that will have high levels of impact. Not just the number of officers trained,” Tiefenbach said.
“This is a value-added initiative for Sam Houston State University, the State of Texas and the law enforcement community,” Ray said. “Our goal is when the crisis or challenge arises, the people charged with meeting that danger have the tools needed to safely resolve the situation in a positive manner.”
